IU Student Expelled from University Hostel Over Allegations of Homosexuality

Dhaka, January 21, 2025

An incident of alleged homosexuality led to the detention of two women at Khaleda Zia Hall, Islamic University (IU), by the hall authorities on Tuesday afternoon. According to reports, one of those detained is a resident student, while the other is an outsider. The hall authorities have ordered the resident student to vacate the dormitory.

The incident occurred in the afternoon of January 21. Resident students of the hall reportedly demanded punishment, explicitly citing allegations of homosexuality.

According to the hall order, a female outsider had been staying intermittently in Room 306 (new block) with the resident student (alias: Mim). Other students reported seeing them in what was described as a “compromising situation” and alerted the hall authorities. Subsequently, the hall body convened an emergency meeting where, based on the verbal complaints of all the students on that floor, the resident student was instructed to leave the hall, and a decision was made to hand over the outsider to the police.

The accused resident student, however, stated: “The allegations made against me are completely baseless. When the incident occurred in the hall, I was actually sitting for an exam. Moreover, I am four months pregnant. Due to illness, I had my friend stay with me in the hall. Without any investigation based on these accusations, I was ordered to leave the dormitory. Today, the hall authorities told me that I was accused of homosexuality, but when I asked for proof, they could not provide any. If anyone can prove the allegations made against me, I will leave the hall myself. As for being seen in a compromising position, this is entirely false and fabricated; nothing of the sort ever happened. I have an exam tomorrow, and after that, I will decide what action to take.”

When contacted, Hall Provost Professor Dr. Jalal Uddin said: “This afternoon, after the students informed us, we called an emergency meeting based on their verbal complaints. The outsider has been handed over to the police, and the resident student has been ordered to leave the hall.”
