Local residents intervened to stop the wedding arrangements of two young women in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali district, Bangladesh. On the night of 15 September 2026, the two women decorated their room as a bridal chamber and spent the night together. The following day, 16 September, their relationship and wedding arrangements became known to local residents, who opposed their plans. A local Union Parishad member subsequently intervened, took the two women into his custody, and contacted their families. The incident occurred in the Majher Pol Lalghar area of Hasnapara village under Laluya Union in Kalapara Upazila.
According to published reports, the two women were aged 19 and 21, with one being a local resident and the other coming from Mymensingh district. A female relative of one of the women had been renting accommodation for some time at the residence of Hanif Mridha in a government housing area near Majher Pol in Hasnapara village. Approximately four days before the incident, one of the young women brought the other woman from Mymensingh to the residence. They subsequently began living together and presenting themselves as a married couple. According to local residents, on the night of Tuesday, 15 September, the two women decorated a room as a bridal chamber and spent the night there. Their arrangements came to the attention of local residents the following day, prompting widespread discussion in the area.
On Wednesday, 16 September, after learning about the women’s relationship, cohabitation and wedding arrangements, a group of local residents opposed their relationship. They described the situation as an activity contrary to social norms and intervened to prevent the wedding arrangements from proceeding. Following objections and interference from local residents, the wedding arrangements were disrupted. The matter was brought to the attention of Kawser Habib, a Union Parishad member representing Ward No. 6 of Laluya Union. He intervened and placed the two women under his custody while contacting their family members. He also stated that the women would be handed over to their families upon their arrival.
