On 23 February 2024, family members, local residents and police intervened after two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship decided to marry and live together in Ekdala, Tebaria Union, Natore Sadar. According to published reports, one of the girls was a student at a school in the Ekdala area of Natore, while the other was a tenth-grade madrasa student from Sylhet. The two had met through Facebook approximately seven months earlier and subsequently developed a close relationship. They eventually decided to marry and live together. Following their decision, the girl from Sylhet travelled to Natore to meet the other girl and they began preparing to marry. When their relationship and marriage plans became known to family members and local residents, they faced opposition and were prevented from proceeding with the marriage. The situation attracted attention in the local area and residents informed the police.

After receiving information from local residents, officers from Natore Sadar Police Station went to the area and took both girls into police custody. The girl from Natore was later handed over to her family, while the girl who had travelled from Sylhet was taken to Natore Sadar Police Station. A relative of the Natore girl also told the media that the girl from Sylhet had been taken to the police station while his niece had been handed over to the family. Police said they would contact the families and arrange for the girls to be handed over to their respective guardians because both were minors.

Mizanur Rahman, then Officer-in-Charge of Natore Sadar Police Station, told the media that the two girls had met on Facebook around seven months earlier and developed a close relationship before deciding to marry. According to his account, when their plan to marry in Ekdala became known on Friday afternoon, local residents informed the police. Officers then went to the area and took the two girls into custody. Their plan to marry and live together did not proceed following the intervention, and police arranged for the two girls to be separated and returned to their respective families.
