This report documents 15 incidents of violations against LGBTIQ+ people, or people accused of same-sex conduct, in Bangladeshi educational institutions between November 2023 and 17 October 2026. Nine of them took place in 2026 alone.
Key findings
- Incidents became more frequent and more severe after August 2024. Two were documented before that month; thirteen followed.
- Removal from halls and hostels is the most common sanction: 16 people lost their seats in 7 incidents, and 6 students were suspended or expelled in 3 more.
- Fellow students or student groups acted first in 12 incidents, and in 12 the administration then took formal action.
- In 7 incidents, 18 people were handed to police. In one, a mobile court sentenced five people to 15 days in jail.
- Privacy was routinely violated: phones and private messages were searched, and statements described as “confessions” were recorded under pressure.
- The same period saw 11 organised anti-LGBTIQ+ campaigns on campuses or by education-sector groups.
All figures are a minimum. They count only incidents reported in the media and documented on this website.
