NCP Leader Posts Anti-LGBTQ and Anti-Transgender Remarks on Facebook
Dhaka, 19 May 2025
Sarjis Alam, the Chief Organizer for the Northern Region of the National Citizens Party (NCP), posted a status on his verified Facebook page expressing strong opposition to homosexuality, transgender, and LGBTQ identities. The statement, made public on Sunday afternoon, claimed support for “rational demands” to protect women’s rights but condemned any effort—direct or indirect—to promote what he described as “heinous and destructive cultures” such as homosexuality, transgender, or LGBTQ.
In his post, Sarjis wrote, “We will have full support for any rational demand to protect women’s rights. But if heinous and destructive cultures like homosexuality, transgender, or LGBTQ are promoted directly or indirectly behind them, then we will have to stand against that evil attempt.”
He further claimed, “The mentally ill who are trying to nurture and promote these deadly diseases that destroy families, society or the state should be given psychiatric treatment. But there is no question of patronizing them. This is the cancer that can slowly take you from your home to the nation to the brink of destruction. We cannot allow that opportunity.”
Sarjis also commented, “A tragic torture like prostitution can never be a profession, but those who have already been involved in this profession through force or entrapment should be brought back from that path and all necessary rehabilitation should be done by the state.”
Such statements from political leaders reflect ongoing anti-LGBTQ and anti-transgender sentiment in the country, and highlight how hate speech is often intertwined with mainstream political discourse.
