Anti LGBTIQ+ Leader: Mohammad Sorowar Hossain

Mohammad Sorowar Hossain is a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Science at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) (IUB Profile). In addition to his academic work, he maintains a personal website (mullobodh.com) and is active on Facebook and Telegram Facebook profile link) (Telegram link).

Anti-LGBTQ+ Activities & Campaigns

Dr. Hossain is widely recognized as one of the most prominent anti-LGBTQ+ voices in Bangladesh. According to activist accounts and review of his social media, a substantial majority of his Facebook posts (estimated at 98%) are dedicated to opposing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. He regularly links a wide range of social and political issues—such as birth control, sanitary napkins, menstrual awareness,, vaccination, and education reforms—to a so-called “LGBTQ+ agenda,” framing them as foreign conspiracies or moral threats.

His anti-LGBTQ+ content includes:

  • Daily posting of over 15 anti-LGBTQ+ Facebook statuses, sometimes sharing misinformation or inflammatory rhetoric.

  • Authorship of the book “সমতার আড়ালে সমকামিতা মিশন” (“Mission of Homosexuality Behind the Mask of Equality”), which is openly hostile to LGBTQ+ people (see book reference).

  • Regular organization of seminars and workshops at IUB and other institutions, with a focus on mobilizing academic and student opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.

  • Founding the organization “Movement for the Protection of Values,” through which he claims to have recruited over 150 university teachers to campaign against LGBTQ+ inclusion.

  • Creation and leadership of a right-wing student network in public universities, which targets and labels other students or teachers as LGBTQ+ supporters, sometimes resulting in threats, harassment, or expulsion campaigns.

  • Establishing a social media “intelligence group” to monitor, expose, and threaten individuals or organizations perceived as supporting LGBTQ+ rights.

Influence & Impact

Under his influence, online hate campaigns and boycott movements have been launched against mainstream organizations such as BRAC, Aarong, Prothom Alo, Walton, and The Daily Star, whenever they are perceived to have shown support for gender diversity or LGBTQ+ inclusivity. These campaigns have reportedly led to some organizations making public anti-LGBTQ+ statements or expelling individuals under pressure. There have been reports of physical attacks, such as the incident at the office of the Social Welfare Society, allegedly inspired by his rhetoric and his followers.

Ideological Stance

Alongside his anti-LGBTQ+ activism, Dr. Hossain frequently voices opposition to women’s rights, feminism, secularism, democracy, and international human rights. He advocates for a strictly patriarchal social order, insisting that men should work and women should remain at home, focusing on childbearing and domestic duties. Although he serves as a university teacher, his views on gender and sexuality have been described by critics as extremely regressive and are influential among segments of the student body.
