Hijra community member Laboni Akhter stabbed to death in Jashore

Jashore — January 9, 2022:

A hijra community member, identified as Laboni Akhter (30), was fatally stabbed near the Halsa Bridge on the Jashore–Chhutipur road around 10:00am. She was taken to Jashore General Hospital, where the emergency physician declared her dead from excessive bleeding.

Eyewitnesses Nazma and Selina—both members of the community—said Laboni had lived with them under the supervision of community leader Panjeri in the city’s Dharmatala area. After disagreements, they moved out; since then, they alleged, Panjeri and associates Munni, Barsha, and Sonia had issued threats.

The witnesses reported that two masked men suddenly attacked near the bridge, stabbing Laboni before fleeing. Police said an investigation is underway to identify the assailants.

Community members called for a swift, transparent investigation and security measures to prevent further violence against hijra residents.
