A 52-year-old Hijra community leader known as Mousumi was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence in the Ambagan Railway Colony area of Khulshi, Chattogram, on Saturday, 5 September 2026. Widely known as Mousumi Hijra, she was recognised as a Guruma, a respected community leader, among a section of the Hijra community in Chattogram. Police recovered her body from the Hijra Colony near Ambagan Railway Colony at about 10:30 a.m. and said preliminary observations pointed to possible strangulation, although the exact cause of death would be determined only after a post-mortem examination.
Mousumi lived alone. According to police and neighbours, she had been talking with neighbours until around 1:00–2:00 a.m. on the night of Friday, 4 September, before returning to her room. In the early hours, residents of an adjoining room reportedly heard an argument coming from her residence but did not intervene, assuming she was speaking with someone she knew. When she did not respond by about 10:00 a.m., neighbours went to check on her. They found the door open and Mousumi lying motionless on the bed in her bedroom.
Pakhi Rahman, a member of the local Hijra community who was among those who found the body, said Mousumi’s mouth was bleeding, her tongue was protruding and her eyes appeared swollen. Other accounts described visible injuries around her neck. Community members alerted the police, and the condition in which she was found led residents to fear that she had been subjected to violence before her death. Sub-Inspector Golam Mohammad Nasim of Khulshi Police Station confirmed that injuries were visible around her neck, and police initially suspected strangulation. Investigators stressed that the precise cause could not be established without the post-mortem findings, and the body was sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for forensic examination.
Investigators also pointed to circumstances that may be relevant to the suspected killing. Mousumi kept a cattle farm behind her residence and had reportedly sold a cow on Friday, 4 September. Police believed the proceeds were kept at her residence because she planned to buy more cattle the following morning. After her body was found, that money and two of her mobile phones could not be located. Police began examining whether the missing money and belongings were linked to her death, although no motive had been established at that stage.
News of her death brought members of the Hijra community from different parts of Chattogram to gather near her residence. They expressed grief and anger and demanded that those responsible be identified and brought to justice. Some alleged that she had been deliberately killed and called for an impartial investigation. Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rahim of Khulshi Police Station said the incident was being treated seriously, that the post-mortem examination would help establish the cause of death, and that investigators were working to identify those responsible.
As of 5 September 2026, no person responsible had been publicly identified. While the circumstances suggested a possible homicide, investigators had not established whether the killing was motivated by financial gain, a personal dispute, prejudice against her Hijra identity or another factor.
