Suspect Arrested in Murder of Hijra Community Leader Mousumi in Chattogram

Police arrested a 34-year-old man on Monday, 7 September 2026, in connection with the suspected murder of Mousumi, the 52-year-old Hijra community leader whose body was recovered two days earlier from her residence in the Ambagan Railway Colony area of Khulshi, Chattogram. The suspect was identified as Mohammad Momin, also known as Sheikh Rony. Investigators reportedly identified him through CCTV footage from the surrounding area, which showed a man in a white T-shirt entering Mousumi’s residence at about 1:14 a.m. on 5 September and leaving at about 3:52 a.m. He was arrested in the Pahartali area of Chattogram. Police described the footage as a significant lead in the case.

Mousumi, widely known as Mousumi Hijra, was recognised as a Guruma among a section of Chattogram’s Hijra community. Her body was found on the morning of Saturday, 5 September. Police saw visible injuries around her neck, community members said her mouth was bleeding, and investigators initially suspected strangulation. The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and a murder case was filed at Khulshi Police Station against unidentified individuals. After her death, members of the Hijra community had gathered near her residence on 5 September, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice. The arrest followed those demands.

After the arrest, police gave an account of what Momin allegedly said during questioning. According to investigators, he said Mousumi had invited him to her residence after indicating that she would give him money, and that an argument followed over a proposed sexual encounter. Police alleged that he then strangled her with a nylon cord and left. These details were presented as information obtained during police questioning and have not been established in court. Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rahim of Khulshi Police Station said the suspect had reportedly admitted involvement in the death and had been produced before a court and sent to prison.

Police also examined a possible financial motive. Mousumi had sold a cow from her cattle farm on Friday, 4 September, and was believed to have kept the proceeds at her residence. After her body was found, that money and two of her mobile phones were reportedly missing.
