Manarat University Hires Expelled Anti-LGBTQ+ Leader Asif Mahtab Utsha

Dhaka, 9 August 2025

Manarat International University has appointed Bangladesh’s controversial and widely criticized anti-LGBTQ+ leader Asif Mahtab Utsha as a lecturer.

Earlier, BRAC University chose not to renew Asif Mahtab Utsha’s contract after he organized an anti-transgender event where he tore textbooks and publicly called on others to do the same. Utsha’s name also appears in the list of 244 university and medical college teachers who issued a statement opposing the establishment of a UN Human Rights Office in Bangladesh, where he was identified as a lecturer at Manarat International University.

Additionally, a social media post from the university highlights an event featuring Asif Mahtab Utsha, although his name has not yet been listed on the university’s official website. Another known anti-LGBTQ+ leader, Mohammad Sarwar Hossain, confirmed in a Facebook post that Utsha is currently teaching at Manarat International University.
