Two detained at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University over allegations of homosexual activity
Dinajpur, Bangladesh — January 19, 2026:
On Monday evening (19 January), two individuals were detained at a mess in an area known as Haven City, adjacent to Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), after other residents alleged they were found in an “objectionable situation,” according to reports.
The reports say that Hafiz, an HSTU student of the Agriculture Department (Batch 21) whose home district is Sirajganj, and Apurbo, a resident of Birganj in Dinajpur who recently completed higher secondary education and is preparing for university admission, entered the mess earlier in the day and went to their room.
According to the reports, other residents later knocked on the door after hearing what they described as unpleasant sounds coming from inside. The residents then questioned the two, and during the questioning, the two reportedly admitted to homosexuality. The residents allegedly kept them confined in the room and informed the university administration.
Subsequently, the two were handed over to police in the presence of the Director of the Student Counselling and Guidance Department, Professor Dr. S. M. Emdadul Hasan, the department’s Assistant Director, Professor Dr. Md. Nizamuddin, and the university Proctor, Professor Dr. Md. Shamsuzzoha, the reports said.
Quoting the proctor, the reports say that after being informed by the mess residents, university authorities went to the location and questioned the two, and that Apurbo admitted the matter. The proctor added that police were called and the two were handed over. He also stated that since Hafiz is a student of the university, action would be taken against him under the university’s existing rules.
