30 June 2024 | Manirampur, Jashore, Bangladesh
On the night of 28 June 2024, police recovered the body of a Hijra woman, Mangoli, also known as Poli, from her residence in Machna village under Khanpur Union of Manirampur upazila in Jashore. Mangoli, aged 32 and originally from Gobindapur village in the same union, was the child of Khalek Gazi. She had purchased land and built a house in Machna approximately 10 to 12 years earlier, where she lived alone. According to local residents, she had last been seen at her home on Thursday night, 27 June. When neighbours noticed that she had not responded throughout Friday, they approached her residence at around 7:00 p.m. and repeatedly called for her. After receiving no response, they informed the police. Officers subsequently entered the house and discovered Mangoli’s body lying on a bed with severe injuries, including wounds to her neck. Police reported that her hands and feet had been tied and that she had been attacked with a sharp weapon. Her body was recovered and sent to Jashore General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. At the time the body was discovered, police had not identified the perpetrator or established the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The investigation subsequently led Manirampur police to arrest Ramzan Hossain, also known as Babu, aged 27, from the Murali intersection area of Jashore Sadar on Saturday, 29 June. Police also recovered a sharp weapon believed to have been used in the killing. According to Manirampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge ABM Mehedi Masud, Ramzan allegedly admitted during preliminary questioning that he had maintained a relationship with Mangoli for an extended period and regularly visited her residence. Police said that Ramzan went to Mangoli’s home at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, 27 June, where an argument reportedly developed after Mangoli asked him to marry her. Investigators alleged that Ramzan subsequently attacked her repeatedly with a sharp weapon, killing her inside the house. Police further alleged that after the killing he took a pair of gold earrings and imitation bangles from the house before leaving at approximately 3:00 a.m.
Mangoli’s brother, Mizanur Rahman, filed a murder case following the killing. Police produced the arrested suspect before a court on Sunday, 30 June 2024. According to the account provided by investigators after the arrest, the killing followed a dispute within the relationship between Mangoli and Ramzan, including Mangoli’s request that he marry her. The case documented the violent death of a Hijra woman inside her own home and led to the arrest of a suspect within approximately two days of the recovery of her body.
